Health and safety
How to set up, use and look after an indoor rower safely, from assembly and first sessions to maintenance and storage.
Safe assembly and positioning
- Always have the frame lock in the locked position when the flywheel and monorail sections are connected. Failing to do so may result in injury if the machine is lifted or moved.
- To avoid possible injury, take care while attaching the monorail section to the flywheel section and while operating the frame lock.
- Always leave enough free space around the rower, clear of obstacles, walls and furniture, to avoid contact or injury while rowing.
Before you first row
- Consult your doctor, and be sure that it isn't dangerous for you to take on a strenuous exercise programme.
- Carefully review the rowing technique information in the Concept2 indoor rowing manual. Poor technique, such as leaning back too far or jumping off the seat, can result in injury.
- Start each workout with several minutes of easy rowing to warm up.
- Start your exercise programme gradually. Row for no more than five minutes on the first day to let your body adjust to the new exercise.
- Gradually increase your rowing time and intensity over the first two weeks. Don't row at full power until you're comfortable with the technique and have rowed for at least a week. As with any physical activity, increasing the volume and intensity too quickly, not warming up properly or using poor technique all increase the risk of injury.
- The best damper setting for a great cardiovascular workout is in the range of 3 to 5. Rowing with the damper set too high can hold back your training, because it may reduce your output and increase your risk of injury.
- Aim for a stroke rate of between 24 and 30 strokes per minute.
Using the rower safely
- Only use the indoor rower in the way it's intended to be used, and don't use attachments that Concept2 doesn't recommend.
- Keep children properly supervised while they or others are using the machine.
- Don't let the handle fly into the chain guide. Place the handle against the chain guide or in the handle hooks before letting go.
- Pull straight back with both hands. Never twist the chain or pull from side to side.
- Don't row with one hand only, as misusing the chain can result in injury.
- Keep children, fingers and loose clothing away from the seat rollers, which can cause injury.
- Carry out proper maintenance as described in the maintenance section of the manual.
- Always put the frame lock in the locked position before moving the indoor rower.
Maintenance and storage
- Regular maintenance keeps the machine running efficiently and safely.
- Using the machine with a worn or weakened part, such as the chain, sprockets, chain and swivel connector, handle U-bolt or shock cord, may injure the user.
- If you're in any doubt about the condition of a part, replace it straight away, and use only genuine Concept2 parts. Other parts may cause injury or make the machine perform poorly.
- To avoid possible injury, take care while attaching the monorail section to the flywheel section and while operating the frame lock.
- Use the machine on a stable, level surface.
- Do not stand an assembled rower up on its end, as it may tip over.
All of this information is included in the manual that comes with the indoor rower.
